Great Story. Having lived on the Olympic Peninsula, I knew about the massive logging operations but never thought about the economics or how a changed ecosystem might not return to it's previous state. This is a pathetic reminder of the consequences of human impacts on natural resources. See my recent story about oysters.
Great writeup about the oysters, and so many parallels with the forests. I'm sure there are other instances from that time period where humans consumed and consumed, with no thought to the future (buffalo slaughter, passenger pigeons...). At least there has been societal progress on that front, though it took running right up to the edge of extinction for so much flora and fauna...
